To rush out SM for the 20th anniversary. There's enough evidence to assume that GameFreak had an enhanced version of XY planned at some point, but it got scrapped.

Saddest thing is, thats not even true. they scrapped Z in order to put more resources into HarmoKnight - which was moderately successful, and Tembo the Badass Elephant - which flopped.
It's this Tembo game from 2015 that really killed Pokemon Z. Gamefreak decided to take a gamble and take the focus away from pokemon in order to develop a backup IP and it didnt work out. The end result being we got a mediocre platformer for pc/ps4/xbone (ballsy for developers with only barely functioning 3ds experience at the time), and gen 6 ended unfinished as a consequence of this bad decision.

I'm inclined to say no just because Gamefreak already dumped their Zygarde lore on XYZ's anime and SM with the Zygarde cells and cores. It also makes no sense for Zygarde to be a wish-granting unfathomable entity when its entire deal is to check Xerneas and Yveltal.

But maybe area zero is like Derry on it, even if has existed for millions of years previously to the firing of the weapon in Kalos, it is a “magnet” to “bad events” and the ray landed in the crater. This could be easily explained away

Since the third legendaries are now always responsible for the gimmick:
Mega - Rayquaza (probably stolen from Zygarde)
ZMoves - Necrozma
Dynamax - Eternatus
Terrastalize could be given to Zygarde as they hide the third legendary for no apparent reason

Maybe this was a false flag. What if everyone in Paldea was psy-opped into believing it was a 1 million year old crater when in fact it was fired 3000 years ago during a war? You wouldn't want your nation and a historically warring nation so close with each other, plus I don't remember if they ever namedrop Kalos or the war either in Paldea, even though they're sharing borders too

Not sure honestly. The crystalS can power pretty much anything (AI, Time machine), but the in-game text says that the Ultimate Weapon used pokemons' life-force, not imagination. Anyways, it could be argued that the technology wasn't even possible at the time of the war, thus to create this kind of tech, the crystals were needed.

just wanted to add this here cause ive seen no one point it out, but on top of everything else pointing to area zero being ground zero for AZ's ultimate weapon, theres also a very interesting pokemon found there in glimmora

more on this through the flavor text, i think at the very least it could be implying that the ultimate weapon didnt form area zero, but it was very VERY likely that it was made using the crystals from area zero. AZ couldve went to paldea during the and went into area zero, saw Glimmora throughout it, then created the ultimate weapon based on its method of attack using the same crystals that glimmora are formed from

This and Floette being in Area Zero (the only pokemon there which doesn't spawn with its fully evolved counterpart ) make the possible connection really strong. It would be sick if it really was being implied, but gamefreak isn't known for more than surface level writing. Won't get my hopes up
