People always prefer the game depictions because the games are forever more popular than the anime.

I don't even think the pokemon anime is even discussed in general anime circles. That's how irrelevant it is.

Maybe it has more to do with people who are more willing to discuss the Pokémon anime than the games and that there's plenty of places where the anime is discussed. So I don't think it's "irrelevant" per-say. You're just in the wrong places.
