They preach the belief that you can like anthro designs and not be one of the stereotypical degenerate furries that everyone knows and loathes, and people respond. (This is helped by a good deal of the content being relationship/wholesome based, instead of merely sexual)
Then theres the people who grew up with the games, and like a lot of things like Lola Bunny, or that one girl from Danny Phantom, they tend to retain childhood crushes.
I personally got into it because I grew up on a farm with little human contact, and just about every pokemon game, and a half dozen seasons of the anime/movies on dvd.
Little me loved to daydream about having adventures as a pokemon trainer. As I grew, this did not change, though the type of adventures did, as I figured out through a few most confusing wet dreams.
Now that I think about it, I may have accidentally brainwashed myself into viewing Pokemon/anthros as the opposite gender.
