There are Hispanic/Lusophone folklore songs about Coco (Cucuy, Cuco, Cuca ect.) It's basically their local ghost/boogeyman monster and parents sings about it in lullabies, spooking misbehaving children. For Brazil folklore, Cuca is an anthropomorphic alligator. Maybe someone loved Coco movie and looked up some ideas.

Cuca is also the name of a female dragon who featured in various medieval celebrations in the Iberian Peninsula and mostly looks like these wigless scaly beasts. There is something fire zodiac to think about.

The Paldea starters kind of do this too. Skeledirge is Mexican-themed (clear Day of the Dead aesthetic) and Quaquaval is a Brazillian carnival dancer, Mexico and Brazil of course being the largest former colonies of Spain and Portugal. Not really sure how Meowscarada fits in here though.

Puss in Boots is Italian of origin, but is a very popular children's story in Mexico(and probably most of the former Spanish Colonies).
