It was always like that since Gen 1 but Gen 8 and 9 punish you harder for ever daring to play with your bros.

Play challenging romhacks with your favorites. They might have gotten buffed to the point they'll be fun to use, and if not, then consider it a personal challenge to carry them through.
I cannot for the life of me play Showdown with anything except optimized meta teams, my anti-scrub brain kicks in immediately, so it's hard for me to enjoy it much.

Or try to get your favorite a proper tera type and a solid moveset in the new game and bring it to coop raids, being able to make your favorite hang with the metas is a fun change too.

I completely graduated from "meta" bullshit 2 Gens ago. Whenever I played with meta teams full of mons I don't care about, it felt like something was off. Winning didn't make me feel happy or accomplished, it just made me feel like I was doing something wrong. Like I was wasting my time and forcing myself to do something I don't like. Now I just use my bromons and I'll be honest and say I lose a lot against people who bring meta teams but despite losing, I'm still filled with a sense of accomplishment. Winning with my bros on the other hand, even if it's uncommon, is so fucking delicious.

same here. i played a handful of casual doubles games with my team of dedenne/dachbun/masquerain/rabsca/klefki/sunflora
to my surprised i actually won quite a lot - dedenne is a total dragon slayer now that it gets dazzling gleam
