Wasn't this the same case with both Unova and Kalos? People loved Grimsley and Caitlin while Alder was seen as a cool dude but not really champion material, and then Siebold, Malva and Drasna completely overshadowed Diantha/were more interesting.

The Alolan E4 had those, but three of them were preestablished characters.
I think that this is a core issue with the E4 in general, for there are no other examples, as far as I can recall, where you interact with more than one member over the course of the game.

That's cause N was the champion.

Only one of those I remember is Malva. And mostly cause her cameo in the Looker stuff postgame.

Diantha is a shitty jobber champion too but Audrey Hepburn knockoff is a nicer design and she has a real ace. Siebold is not popular, Drasna is but that's just because she's a GILF, and Malva has the extremely interesting angle of being a Team Flare supporter but that's just wasted potential like everything else about XY's story
