Base Fug is better. People use it's airlock ability to hit Primal Groundon with water moves. Also Kyogre is squishy on the physical side so one Dragon Ascent and it's gone.

You're right. Most third members feel tacked on, such as Giratina, or don't play a huge role.

Them axing the singular third version definitely played a part. Weather trio being the first trio to all be cover legendaries also contributed

Gen 3 had the best legends, the lore was still reigned in and there was no fucking Poke Jesus. It had the coolest sub legends in the Regis and Latis and didn't overload you on ugly shit like Heatran or Volcanion. Deoxsys and Jirachi are S tier mythicals too. All in all completely solid with not a single weak point.

You're thinking Zygarde. I get what you're saying about Necrozma, if I recall I think even the story doesn't treat it as a "trio member" (but at least it's more related than Eternatus). Kyurem isn't really tacked on, but he definitely doesn't feel like a "peer" to the other two (and neither is something like Rayquaza, but Kyurem takes it a step further).
