that's not it, I tested several times if my "shiny pokemon battled" counter would go up before catching one since I always save before the battle and it would only go up after I caught one.

I caught a shiny grumpig only because I didn't remember it was spoink's evo and i didn't bother evolving one yet. Saw this strange pokemon in the wild that looked like a regional Drowzee, so i engaged, saw the shiny effect, went to google the mon and saw that it was supposed to be pink and not yellow.
Else i would have left it there without noticing. Since I skipped a lot of gens there are a lot of pokemon I wouldn't recognize if shiny or not

"Battled" was a weird term to use, but really it's counting individual shiny Pokemon that have been seen or obtained by the player.

It just means shinies in the dex. If you evolve a Pokemon, it'll add to the number. Same if you get traded one.

I was wrong in that post, unfortunately. Because I evolved one of my shinies with a rare candy and the number still increased. I think it might not count duplicates, but I can't be certain. I have 2 shinies of a single species, and the count is higher than the number in my boxes.

If you got any in surprise trade they count toward the total. It's not actually "battled", it's just every unique shiny marked off as seen in the Pokedex.
