I'd say they never really cared to begin with, considering forretress/mawile personally never looked like steel types (yeah mawile has "steel horns", and glalie is supposedly made of rock, fuck off) and bronzor has bronze both in name and origin (bronze bells).
Steel is metal in the same way psychic is mediums and magicians or flying is wind and birds, despite water being separated from ice and ground being separated from rock, with sand being something not even gamefreak knows where to put it (sandstorm is rock, sandstorm weather ball is rock, sandstorm boost rock types' SpD, palossand is ground, hippowdon and garchomp are ground, sand attack is ground).
It'd be weird for a gold pokemon NOT to be a steel type. I hate gholdengo but being a steel type is the least of its problems.
