The bigger that shield and the less hits they take, the easier it is to keep momentum in sales. A company, like Activison-Blizzard or Wizards of the Coast, can certainly take more hits to gain profits in the short term, but that may cause damage to the brand. And that sort of damage can be very much like a permanent debuff that just reduces the shield. Any company can earn a lot of money in 1 or 2 years, but its about playing the long game, to be still around in 5 or 10 or 20 years. (hope that helped in some capacity)
