I stopped playing Pokemon because XY was garbage, and then came back to SV which I'm actually having a ton of fun with. I've been curious about the Pokemon gens I missed.

I've seen some people defend gen 7 here and there but I constantly see gen 8 getting shit on. When I watch SV gameplay, I always hear people talking about how glad they are to get away from gen 8 and how much it sucked. Was it really that bad?

Didn't play ultra sun so I can't speak to those but gen 7 is genuinely unmitigated bum

This game legit sucked ass. This and gen 6 were games where I couldn't even point to at least having fun with my team.

The QOL upgrades with name rater,etc. in the pokemon center were a positive tho.

SWSH was all of the problems from SM exacerbated. Yes, it really was that bad. Part of why Gen 8 was so universally hated was because the only way you could possibly defend the design choices made there is if you thought Gen 7 was acceptable to begin with. People thought Alola was lackluster because of temporary limitations on the 3DS, Galar proved that wasn't the case but they made deliberate choices to lower the bar from XY of all games.

I'm playing Nova Sun and can confirm that the designs choices (pacing, allies healing you in certain places) makes a lot more of sense when the game have trainers with actual teams. All gen 7 needed was a difficulty boost, , the rest works all fine. The Fire Trial was nuts.

Please, define "fun", because I've seen this same line numerous times, yet no one can actually explain why gen 6/7 were "shit" but new gens are night and day great.

I noped out of XY too after playing through it half way back when it came out.
I liked US/UM for the story. I actually wanted to hate it but ended up liking it a lot.
Sw/Sh was meh. The professional sports shit made sense for the Pokemon world I guess and Dynamaxing grew on me. I think I liked it a lot more than I would if I played today because I was coming down off the high of really enjoying UM after swearing off Pokemon for like 6 years.
Would I recommend either? Not really. US/UM felt like a 3rd party core series game, like Colosseum. So If you're into that you might like US/UM.
Play Sw/Sh only if you like it's theme of giant Pokemon fights and Pokemon battling being treated like a pro sport. Otherwise its a total downgrade from SV in every way.

On the other hand it has pretty good atmosphere, the story and lore are above average for pokemon games, the mon designs are very solid, and everything surrounding ultra space (except that fucking corridor) is amazing. usum is also slightly more challenging than the average pokemon game

The campaign in XY was just so incredibly unsatisfying. You have four effective rival characters, the primary genderswap rival has really no characterization at all and I can't even remember if the other three do anything the whole game. Team Flare was a huge joke, which I hear started a trend of increasingly mundane teams, but Team Star in the new game at least has charm. Lysander makes a guy whose plan is to remove WATER from the world seem sensible. Even for a Pokemon title I remember that one being unreasonably easy too. I'm not competitive and never did the post game for gen 6 so I can't comment on them but it was a title that was thoroughly lacking in charm.

Gen 9 has been treating me very well. There's a very broad cast and almost everyone gets a lot of characterization. The random ass gym leaders are giving me things to remember like Truleewoodo and the three stories that come together at the end are a really nice take on the standard Pokemon formula without moving too far away. It doesn't do anything ambitious but the world is nice and I feel like I'm going on an adventure with the proper beats. Team Star isn't threatening in the least but they have characters instead of caracitures. The game has moments of surprising challenge too, it's never a hard game and it's possible that my ten year hiatus is the only reason I'm not sweeping it but I do feel like I have to think my turns through.

Anyone can have fun in any of the games, but in my opinion, XY, SM/USUM, SWSH, and SV are increasingly bad as each game released.

SV is the only game I haven't been able to force myself through, I'm just not having a good time

Yes. Gen 8 was really bad. Empty games devoid of meaningful exploration headlined by starters that were either ugly or dumb (Rillaboom). Couple that with the ugly textures, weird camera, plain ui, lack of a cool evil team, a clinically stupid true villain, a mary sue champion, a kaijufication gimmick that actually wasn't so bad but was more simple and easier to exploit than older gimmicks (but at least more consistent) and the dex cut and the end result was a steaming pile of listless, depressing shit.
