How much is age suppose to matter in the anime?

Iris gave Cynthia a good push and Ash defeated her. Ash then defeated Leon who's been fighting since he was his age. How are 10 year old new Champions capable of this when this couldn't happen logically due to experience? Leon and Cynthia young adults meaning they're probably 10+ their senior.
