Reminder that we only have to deal with these stupid motherfuckers because someone at game freak decided they have a hard on for fucking Pulseman and that they desperately want GF's first mascot to be referenced in every fucking Pokemon game now until the end of time. I liked Rotom before they started doing this shit, now I can't stand it. It used to be a fun one off thing, now it's literally in every piece of technology in every game. there's something kinda soulless about relegating the pokedex to a smartphone app, it was an iconic piece of hardware unique to that world. Next they'll do away with pokeballs and you can just keep your entire team on your smartphone instead.

The PokeDex was just a PDA. It doesn't make sense for the player to carry around a dedicated device in the age of Smartphones. The idea of having a dedicated scanning device to "document the Pokemon of the world" is also a relic of Takeshi Shudos lore that states Pokemon were a newly discovered thing that just recently appeared and killed all the animals. Shit just doesn't make sense in modern Pokemon lore. I'm honestly shocked they kept the Pokedex for as long as they did

But it was that way from the very first games. Part of its appeal was as a refreshing take on the RPG formula, taking it out of the typical, vaguely medieval fantasy world and into a modern world like our own. People in RGBY play Mario on SNES, watch TV and listen to the radio, go to pachinko parlors and nostalgically remember the real-life Moon landing.
In GSC they've all got mobile phones comparable to Japanese garake and travel by Shinkansen. The Japanese version of Crystal even features connectivity with real-life garake.
This has always been part of the series, you're just noticing it more due to your familiarity with contemporary technology.

Ugly as fuck, no wonder Rotom is the mascot for these things in the main games. I'd bet GF tried multiple times to implement Porygon into these concept but eventually stopped because the results all looked similar to that thing.

The real reason they just went with a Rotom phone is because they're creatively bankrupt and it allows them to use the same design forever.

Personally, I just don't like that it's based off a Pokemon, because that implies it's alive which is sort of weird and takes the fun out of a gadget for me. I would've preferred a newer Pokegear or something. That was basically what a smartphone is, just a phone that can do a dozen other things. The updated ones even looked like flip phones, there's no reason a V3 couldn't exist.

i miss the unique dex designs so much. it sucks because i love rotom and i fucking hate that he's been reduced to a shitty gimmick that nobody likes.
the idea of rotoms possessing technology to help people is actually a great concept as well, but the execution is so fucking soulless and boring. personally i partly blame the rotomdex for why the phones are so shit and soulless, it's the typical GF one extreme to the other; people hated rotomdex because it was annoying as fuck and wouldn't shut up, so GF just decided to turn rotom into barren husks they can reuse without any additional effort.

In SM you have the Rotom Dex. It's your friend, constantly talks to you, and just acts really playful in general.
By SV though, Rotoms are mass-produced to be used as a tool and nothing but a tool. It has absolutely zero personality, likely from being bred to not feel anything. Unlike SM it never comes out on its own, never says a word, it just does what's required of it despite being a living creature

What features of the Pokedex are analogous to a PDA? You can't enter your own data, there's no scheduling, there's really nothing about it that functions like a PDA. Like, the Pokegear is an ancient ass cell phone in every aspect, but the only things the original Pokedex and a PDA have in common are their most vague shape and the fact that data can apparently be read on them. It's arguable that the player character is entering data into some sort of database, which frankly doesn't scream PDA to me.

I'm sure there's some handheld digital encyclopedia that's a better example of what it's imitating. We did it, we found the Japanese enough technology. Doing a little googling, 電子手帳おもちゃ is the Japanese term for these things, and while I don't know any exact dates they're definitely technologically similar to Pokemon's contemporary Tomogatchi, so I imagine there's cross pollination one way or another. So in the end, the Pokedec was probably not based on a PDA, that other anon was a retard.

So Lucas/Dawn found it and then bred it a bunch to the point that, in later sequels, there are wild ones all about. They haven't made more forms for Rotom that can battle since Platinum's original batch. Electric/Bug as a bug-like drone seems like it would be backwards for Rotom since the other forms are household appliances. The commonly suggested bug zapper seems like it would at least make sense in the "used to kill that element" like a lawnmower for grass. Or maybe that whatever/Bug should be a form for a different species that has a similar existance to Rotom, but different specialties. Like a physically-inclined attacker that uses things like wind up robots or toy robots, dinosaurs, bugs and such as host objects. You could be cheeky and have a realistic stag beetle be described as a monster from a tv show.

The Pokemon TCG has had a rule since the WOTC days that you can't play a trainer card that does nothing. Like if you have zero cards in your deck, you can't play a trainer card that only draws or searches the deck (I'm actually not sure if you're allowed to shuffle a 1 card deck). The same goes for a card that looks at your opponent's hand. If they have no hand, the card would do nothing. Drone Rotom is worded that way specifically so that it can't be played unless your opponent has a card in their hand. Its actually because of Yokai watch. Gamefreak went full retard when Yokai Watch became popular. Thats why the anime has such a goofy style for Alola and Rotom became the forever floating around you ghost partner

Yeah, this is my main issue with rotom phones. I don't mind the dex being on a phone, but you're telling me we're just mass breeding millions of living creatures to shove into phones, unable to express any individuality, and then selling them as consumer goods? How is this legal?
And then in SV, we're just supposed to accept that our friend's dad is the mastermind behind all this and is making millions off of it? Like damn, I don't know how I feel being friends with someone directly benefitting from the enslavement of millions of rotom.

I think the justification for Mow Rotom being a Grass type (or at least for why it learned Leaf Storm, the Rotom forms were all Electric/Ghost till gen 5) was the lawnmower chucking back bits of grass. A bug-type bug zapper wouldn't make any sense unless it's attacking with dead bugs or something.

It's just an encyclopedia. Maybe back then when Pokemon was fresh and in-universe there really was just 151 species, but nowadays it's just a NatGeo tome.It is not special. If they relegated pokeballs to an app then you might have a point, but we didn't reach that yet.
