Everyone on vp throws the terms "open world" and "hallway" around at random, so I made a diagram defining them and adding some examples. Share your thoughts.

All SV was missing was catch-up scaling. Keep the late-game fights at a higher level, but bring up any skipped fights so you don't completely steamroll if you go out of order.

The lashback to SV's structure on this board is super over the top.

Sure, it kind of pushes you to do it in a specific order and isn't as free as ut could be, and it would have been nice to have each objective have a recommended level on it so you don't blindly go into a new area you have no shot at handling, but at the end of the day, it's still wildly better than something linear like SwSh.

For one, it allows you to skip ahead if you're skilled, providing more of a challenge.

It also forces you to actually explore and find an objective you can handle.

Open world works with procedural generation that actually has effort put into it, take a look at Minecraft's modding community and community made maps for example.
GF just doesn't know how to adapt to changing times, and so the hallway structure they have established works out better for them. Had it over to a company that knows how to make open-world games and we'll see an amazing pokemon game, PLA already showed the potential for this.

That's not what hallway means. Hallway is just strict linear progression with no option to diverge from the intended path. In particular, it was used to describe the trend of first-person shooters where you literally just moved forwards through the map.

Yes exactly, like in fps games you don't have to kill some enemies, you can run past them and shoot the guys later in the level.

Only issue I'm having is because I chose to do these out of guided order by going east and moving counterclockwise through the plains into the mountains my first visit to the west is a lot faster and underwhelming. I've elected to split my team up and raise new Pokemon as I continue so that I don't just get bored from the lack of challenge. In defense, I have been griding auto battles as I comb through the region for items nonstop so I'm very much naturally overleveled even if the intended path was less optional or not. But because there is no scaling I do feel like I've truly done the game out of order.
On the other hand, in SwSh because of how the Wild Area was scaling I constantly had to make sure anytime I walked through it I had lvl 60-ready Pokemon with me. It got annoying that no matter what I wanted to catch or just drive through that they were all stuck at 60 constsntly and I had to lead accordingly. Maybe I wanted to find a Duskull at level 20 again. For Sword thos wasn't a big deal because the routes still existed, and as much as they sucked they stayed static so I had the benifite of having my cake and eating it too.

Open Zone is the best format for Pokemon, bar none. You get a good deal of exploration while also not breaking the level curve's dick in half.

Scarlet and Violet have the best map design the Pokémon games have had in over a fucking decade. I truly did not expect GameFreak to bitch slap me with their dicks as hard as they did because the open world is just that good. Level scaling wasn’t even a problem for me because I rotated my team a lot and was genuinely getting my ass kicked left and right regardless. And there’s actual shit you can find if you bother to explore the world like the earlier generations, which is fucking amazing. I went up a waterfall, went into a cave at the end of its trail, and found one of those legendary shrines even though I didn’t have all the swords. Was a great feeling. I still haven’t fully grasped that GameFreak are the ones who made this shit.

People need to stop obsessing over linearity, it's not inherently bad or good. That being said it's fucking pokemon, the gameplay has always been mediocre and the map and dungeon design laughable at best. This hasn't changed.

For me, I keep coming back to that I wish they gave us more to explore in terms of increasing the size of towns and cities. So far, they feel like little hamlets which really takes away from what we're supposed to be seeing rather than what is presented over what is said. I guess I also dislike the lack of level scaling to keep battles challenging while also encouraging a free exploration of the area. I mean, you can default that certain spots will naturally be more challenging over other ones, or have that they scale higher until you reach a certain point where they can let you catch up or surpass them in level. As it stands, you're forced to predict the level of the challenge by the Pokemon you encounter on route.

Anything is better than full on linearity though. I am so tired of handholding and being forced to fight gyms in a particular order that the game planner wanted. It was one thing I did like about the old Pokemon Diamond and Pearl was that you could fight the Ghost, Fighting and Water gym in any order you wanted . The old Emerald (or was it Ruby and Sapphire?) that allowed you to completely skip Brawley's gym in favor of continuing on.

The cities and towns are very disappointing to me. There should be a lot to do and fun things to find in them but there's nothing to them other than sandwich ingredients, restaurants, clothing, and gyms. Most of those shops could be combined like all clothing could be sold by two stores, one for normal clothes and one for higher priced items. All sandwich ingredients and picnic items could be sold in one store. They don't need several of the same coffee shop and restaurants in the same city, especially when they're often placed within steps of each other. It feels to me that they either didn't know what to do with the cities or were just lazy and thought all these filler stores were good enough. I like the layouts and designs of a couple of them but then there are ones like Medali and that town near the school that are so small and bland. I love the game, but the cities are a big flaw to me.

I know what you mean, they even go so far has having the same exact shop selling the exact same items in two different spots in town. Not to mention, I can't believe how much I miss the old Pokemon centers. It would be nice to give the option for both, one for towns and cities that lets you walk inside and the open air ones for travel. Diversity is a nice spice in a game. I just keep coming back to that it is a lazy attempt to fill out space without needing to really think and that just breaks my heart. No real reason to explore places, no purpose to visiting houses and the small details in each location. Just run, fight the gym, and leave.

The amusing thing is that you can still, with enough autistic determination and thanks to how shitty the engine is, still jump up cliffs enough to get to all sorts of areas that the game clearly doesn't intend you to be, including Area 0 right off the bat after starting the treasure hunt.
Whoever built the world geometry was rather lazy.

I like an open-ended but structured experience. Encouragement to go to certain areas or check out certain things, maybe even some mandatory story beats sprinkled in here or there but the overall game is designed in such a way that it really doesn't matter in what order you do things. Would be interesting to see certain gyms be harder or easier based on when you tackle them in the story due to just how wildly power can fluctuate based on evolution stats and available move pools.
