If you look at film, for example, some of the highest grossing films are shit like Avatar and Marvel movies which are at best decent quality but Avatar is pretty much the Lumineon of movies. On the other hand, for something in season, A Wonderful Life did poorly in the box office at first, but because it was cheap to syndicate it was on TV all the time, and now it's an iconic Christmas movie that is imitated constantly even outside Christmas. And don't even get me started on how Citizen Kane didn't do well in the box office but revolutionized camera work in film. Is Emerald Citizen Kane? Absolutely fucking not. But we can argue that it's better than ORAS in a large number of areas. ORAS is definitely better with the communication features though, thank the Gen 6 engine and the 3DS for that. I'm more likely to go back to ORAS if I want to fuck around with Secret Bases, and I absolutely am down for that. But there's enough Emerald has going for it on a playthrough and in postgame that ORAS can't replace it. It's not like HGSS where I only really need to go back to GS for nostalgia and weird glitches, and I'm also very down for nostalgia. I think the best we can hope for is a hack of ORAS at some point in the future, even if neither it nor Emerald are good graphically in the overworld the gameplay can be modified to the point where they combine the best elements of the two.
