Trainer battles outside of Battle Facilities and PvP are completely worthless and add nothing to the games except for pointlessly padding them out.

This is the strangest take I've seen on the board in a while.
It's like saying the levels are all worthless in Mario because they pointlessly pad out the journey between you and the flagpole.

They would be if the levels were a single jump and an immediate finish line.
Because that's what 90% of trainers are once you are out of the early game. 1 or 2 weak ass mons that you ko with your lead in 1 hit.

Any kind of gameplay at all is pointless padding. You're going to reach the end anyway, the games should boot up straight to the Ed Sheeran credit song to not waste anyone's time. It's 2022, people have better things to do.

Levels in Mario actually become challenging and are unique to navigate level to level.

99% of the time trainer battles are just clicking A twice with your starter and then it's over.

The majority of fights in turned based JRPGs are worthless. Even the bosses because a lot of them you don't even get to use all the mechanics like poison and other status effects.

But that's every battle in unmodified Pokemon games, not just trainer battles.

In battle facilities and PvP I have to actually think about what to click A on.

In regular NPC battles I don't have to think about anything and still win.

That "padding" is the appeal of Pokemon. It's video game comfort food where you can pretend to be a kid again who befriends a bunch of monsters. They could easily cut the shit you like out and still sell millions, and in fact have.
