Which is why Ash only appears in the first game and the games after that diverge from the anime with random other "You can be Ash too!" characters. Plus the games have basically no story and absolutely no inter-game continuity.

There was inter-game continuity from gen III to gen V. Gen VI started multiverse bullshit and now it's not as clear cut but there's still plenty of references to the events of other games. Not to mention Rainbow Rocket lol.
