My problem with this design is that it makes no sense. Why does a chest evolve into some surfing cheese string dude? There's zero logical coherency.

The Pokemon isn't the chest, the Pokemon just inhabits and manipulates it. Gimmighoul can exist just fine without it as proven by the existence of Roaming Form. Also, I like the concept of getting a chill gold idol as result of feeding a greedy ghost coins rather than just getting a bigger chest.
That said, I do think the line would've been best as a split evo, if just for the people who were disspaointed. Make a traditional chest mon that evolves with 999 Gimmighoul coins, make Gholdengo the "extra effort" option that still evolves with 999 coins, but also needs to have max friendship to play into it's apparently outgoing disposition.

You know how some older mons lost a bit of charm after the transition to 3D (losing the dynamic poses from their 2D sprites, colors desaturated for some reason..) I think Gholdengo is the opposite of that. His design utilize 3D in ways that might not work if he was introduced in older gens

SV gave Pokemon models more detailed textures, steel type mons becoming metallic and shiny. Gholdengo is literally gold. His animations while following you and battling on water are also neat

To me Gimmighoul line is THE gimmick mon of this gen. You find Gimmighouls all over the map especially interesting spots like ruins and checkpoints.
While the two other mimic lines are stylized to fit the Pokemon world (Pokeball form) Gimmi's in a literal treasure chest and one of the themes of this region is 'Finding your own treasure'. This is a line involved around exploring and rewarding you for doing so.

Gimmighoul is not even a 'normal' ghost Pokemon. it's super weak so the journey to evolve it is like evolving a Magikarp to Gyarados where a weak useless mon becomes a strong mon through your hard work

For better or worse this is a very unique line. If they're the usual ghost objectmon then it'd make way more sense for it to become a bigger chest/mimic monster but they're not. They're also apparently ultimate beings and can't breed for some reason

I don't think they're based on anything deep other than the idea of collecting coins all around the region for a little dude to evolve into a stack of coins. Don't know why they made it a radical mascot surfer dude but his animations are adorable and full of personality so I really don't hate it.

He's my favorite mon from this gen. I understand why people hate it but I can also see people genuinely liking it too. He's a funny guy

It's represented in the battle animations and Amie/equivalent features. They all give the creatures more character that one sprite's animation.

Yeah I don't really have a problem with how most of the 3D look, it's just the common complaints I've seen. I do think new mons have more saturated color palette compared to the old ones but that's not a bad thing

I love the amie/refresh/whatever animations in the 3D games I won't trade it for anything else
