The gameplay loop is fundamentally the same between GSC and RS, but in terms of the amount of stuff to do, GSC simply has more across the board. So ultimately, Ruby and Sapphire feel like a step down as games for it.
Emerald assuages this mostly with the inclusion of the Frontier. Which works to greatly expand the number of gimmicks the game throws at you, along side the simple amount of content.
Platinum brings back the Battle Frontier and adds onto that the really cool Distortion World dungeon as well.
