See, Japan uses the term "maniac" in a specific way to refer to someone who's obsessed with a single hobby. Like those crazy train otaku or the gunfags. "Pokemon autist" probably would have been a better localization.
The image of a Pokemon autist has changed over the years. In gen 1, it was pretentious asshole who needs a haircut. In gen 2, it was a tool who run around in a cloak. Then later gens it was a furry. And now, it's a Pokemon youtuber.
