Why does this thing exist? Why not Magnezone? I can think of so many other Electric-types I'd rather see in that slot.

Yeah why not the less popular evo, its a real mystery. Magnemite/Coil are actually super popular.

The part where Magneton is just three coils. Its popularity overlaps with Magnemite.
Magnezone stops just being Magnemite so this logic doesn't carry over.

Well, Magneton can only evolve by either using a Thunder Stone or exposing itself to a special magnetic field. There were likely no humans in Sandy Shocks' time that knew how Evo Stones worked, and it isn't affected by external electromagnetism due to it being a Ground Type.

Also its walk cycle is cute as hell

Literally all the Pokemon has to do is the touch the stone, and it evolves, no human necessary

Sandy Shocks isn't an actual pokemon.
It isn't a past version of Magneton brought to modern times through time travel but an artist's "what-if?" brought to life.
So it doesn't follow typical Magneton evolution.

Or the pokemon hadn’t evolved to the point of being reactive to stone radiation. It’s interesting that there are two other past paradoxes that are of mons that evolve by stone. Evo stones *kind of* factor into Roaring Moon too, since in XY it’s hypothesized that mega stones are mutated evo stones in response to the weapon, and we do have other examples of Megas calling back to a pokemon’s latent/true power lost to time in Aerodactyl and Ampharos.
