How do I make Scarlet and Violet more difficult for a first-time playthrough? I probably won't nuzlocke it but I'd like ways to help me not steamroll through, like using no potions etc

My friend didn’t fight the optional trainers or grind and was under leveled the entire time
Try to not use potions or revives it’ll be funny

Don't do any trainer battles and avoid all wild mons, I did this and was about 15-20 levels underleveled and it was actually tough, especially eri.

what about the open world aspect? i know you can just fuck off and skip the gym leaders and do other quests instead, or do they not scale at all

Avoid the gyms as long as possible and catch mons above your badge level that won’t listen to you. Turn every fight into a slot machine on whether the move you select will actually be executed.

My friend did an egglocke. He got a bunch of people we know to donate him eggs but not tell him what they were and he could use only that team for the whole game.

Take on every gym with the same number of pokemon and the same theme as them. Show them who the better trainer really is.

Create rotating teams of pokemon to use throughout your game, I've been switching between about 30 mons for my playthroughs. Expand your roster more if they keep getting over leveled, I've found that, for example, taking on one of the treasures of ruins that are all at level 60 with a team in their mid 40s gives a decently satisfying level of difficulty.

Fight gym leaders and Team Stat in the "intended" order, some of them actually have solid teams.
Skip trainers, it's easier than you'd expect to wind up underdeveloped now that trainer battles are entirely optional and random encounters are gone.

I did this and I was underleveled by at least 4 levels the entire time, and also no items during battle. I got my ass whooped a few times at th end (especially by Eri) but for the most part it wasn't really super hard. It made the game way more engaging though.
