I think dlc is off the cards since we've started a new generation with SV, and I imagine we would likely see another Legends style game when BW remake time comes in probably gen 10.

One of the choices when Arceus first summons you is the option to answer that you know nothing of pokemon. Literally fucking impossible for Dawn/Lucas to know nothing about Pokemon. It's not them.

Pretty sure Game Freak is just going to trust the fans to come up with their own conclusions considering that Dialga, Palkia, and Arceus all end up in your possession so there isn't a reason that you can't just go back at any moment and that you can't just take Ingo home either. It isn't explicitly said you're stuck there as much as it isn't spelled out for you that you can go home at any given time. It's a cop out but it's Game Freak, what do you expect?

I'd argue that ability to choose is for helping the player decide who they want the protagonist to be.
Either they're the Sinnoh Protagonist, or they're literally (You) from the real world isekai'd into Hisui, similar to how LGPE isekais (You) into Kanto.

The whole deal with Arceus seems pretty meta considering he starts following you around in between completely different games via his shards and mentioned walking besides you. He also just so happens to be a transferable Pokemon along with his other altar egos.

The main character you play as gets isekai'd after they become champions of Sinnoh within the Diamond and Pearl timeline and as such travel around to different regions, this is why Lucas is wearing a Kalos shirt and Dawn is wearing the Alola shirt. Also, these characters are judged to be older by Cylene.
After the dex is complete in PLA, Arceus awards you (when you are younger and in your original time) the Azure Flute to be with you once again. With Arceus by your side the "second" time around with the events of PLA occuring within the BDSP timeline (which accounts for the Legend of the Sea), the isekai does not happen since Arceus reunites with you.
