Red is our avatar in the game, in the canon from the games he is a champion, now an adult and completed the dex (kanto at least).
Ash is a version of Red that was modified to be the mascot for the anime that is just an ad for the pokemon games. So they need to reset Ash's brain and his age each generation. I liked Ash until pokemon johto. His journey should have ended a long time ago and they can make another character for the anime but for some unknown reason they will reuse Ash forever.

Black and White was particularly egregious about this.
Other than that he doesn't do much to deserve hate.
The asspulls are pretty bad, but that's just how the anime is. Can't blame a character for stupid bullshit like electrocuting a Rhydon through it's horn when it works.

Ash literally is a static protagonist that can never truly grow up. All of his achievements are empty and devoid of meaning. He will never finish his quest to be a "Pokemon Master' because it is the wish of a child that doesn't truly understand just how much of an impossibility that is. He is nothing more than a walking endorsement for a game that much like him has stagnated for a very long time.

Red is a silent protagonist so people can project anything they want onto him. It's like how people always draw the Dragon Quest 3 protagonist like some solemn badass despite having literally no personality, and if he did it probably would have been generic shonen protagonist personality like Dai.

Okay but I don't think he captures any of them unless you count the rotomdex, meanwhile half the guys he fights in finals are rocking legendaries of some variety.
