Always thought that a good gym leader means that you can't just sweep with your starter but if you go out of your way to get another super-effective type, you'll have a much easier time being able to tag-team the gym leader.

But this is litterally the start of the game, you have nothing in your bag, you have a very small pool of Pokémon to try against the boss, and you're just at a massive disadvantage to start with since that gym leader would have good held items, hidden abilities, great moves, etc etc while you have nothing and Girafarig alone has better stats than your average second-form starter even without taking into account Eviolite

This is THE FIRST FUCKING GYM. Players have little options and may not have any viable options depending on the dex again that minmaxed team.

A challenge would be requiring the player to go a bit out of their way to find Pokémon able to counter the gym leader or forcing them to think outside the box with the shitmons available to them, not hitting them with something they literally can't have an answer to until much later in the game.

Make a team out of a starter, some route 1 and bug shitmons, no TMs, no held items, no overleveling and see if you can beat your own gym

This is the first gym. Your options at the first gym, 20 minutes into the game are extremely limited.

Later in the game where you have a tons of mons to try out, items to back you up, TMs to round up your moveset? Sure.

Having to face a minmaxed team right off the gate (without even taking into account how some of the mons on there just out-stat you, which would be a challenge of its own without the optimisations) when you can't do anything to get up to their weight class is not strategy or challenging, it's just bad game balance.

I wish Gym leaders did apply some gimmicks to their teams (smogonfaggotry not applicable, at least not in the earliest parts of the game) to both teach new players about their existence while still playing both into their type/theme AND making them somewhat challenging.
Like a Grass-type gym leader that takes advantage of Grassy Terrain (such as a Skiddo/Gogoat ace), or an Ice-type gym leader that plays around hail/snow and how it interacts with various abilities.

I think another important part to remember is to give the player tools to counteract the gimmicks.

Like being able to catch a Pokémon that can setup its own terrain/weather or dispel it to encourage them to interact with that mechanic instead of just suffering through it

In case someone is struggling, the gimmick has a counter in the form of entry hazards like Stealth Rock, which helps players understand the value of using such moves.

the joke here is you. X Items were buffed to be +2 stages in modern games. This can make a single pokemon far bulkier, stronger, or faster than most CPUs can handle. Modern games drown the player in resources, so kids can bruteforce challenges - which is the intended solution to a kid running into Mela too early.

My point is that older players are more likely to forgo items than newer ones to challenge themselves, so "harder gyms" (though not what OP put with that normal gym) can be bruteforced by kids.

This would be the last gym battle based on version (like Iris/Drayden). This should play in a thunderstorm so infinite rain and electric terrain. The player is meant to change the weather and the terrain to their advantage. But the gym leader will try to gain his advantage back by Volt Switching and setting up again with Tailwind,Rain Dance and Electric Terrain.

I am making an enhancement hack of heart gold with two of my friends.

Gym 1 has mostly generic flying types but some unique stuff like gligar and togetic

Gym 2 is where shit gets real. He has a techniccian scyther, buffed ariados and ledian, Anorith, volbeat, and illumise, who both the fireflies have a slight stat buff. Volbeat is part electric, while Illumise is part fairy.

Don’t even get me started on the other gyms. They have some type diversity, deadly fighting styles, and have insane rosters.

i don't see the problem (outside of hidden power that doesn't exist anymore), the team makes clever use of all various battle mechanics, held items- abilities- moves, teaching the player how deep the battle system can really be
It's much better than the Gamefreak way of just assembling shit at random
