They were much cooler than any gimmick that came after. People liked them so I don't know why they decided to replace it.
You could argue they were unbalanced but neither are any of the other gimmicks.

I just wish more NPC trainers used megas against you when they were a thing.

I wasn't a fan of them. They took away evo potential if mons who need them, were overpowered, and barely any fights had them ingame. Mega Sharpedo may also be the worst design in the series.

This. Megas were shit because they actually required strategy and had a modicum of nuance between being nerfed/buffed between gens.
Z-Moves and Dynamax are far better because I can just spam A to win and don't need to worry about the balancing next gen when they're sidelined for an equally broken gimmick.

I too thought that mawile, sableye which you posted and many others not having needed evolutions 3 gens later is cool because Charizard got a cool form. And I really like CharX, it wasn’t worth it given the concept abandonment.
