It gave you a reason to explore and most of them were in awkward areas so it gave you a reason to go off the beaten track (aside from a handful which the player might come across normally, which ensures the player is at least aware of them and knows to look out for them). And as a reward, you get 4 legendaries. Even if you dislike searching for things across the map, it's objectively better than pretty much every other item hunt that has appeared in past games (Spiritomb wisps, Alolan Digletts, Zygarde cells, mega stones) since their are far fewer things to find, they're far easier to spot and there are no time-based restrictions that would cause you to miss them even if you were in the right area.
Only other sidequest that comes close is the regi one, but even that was just a case of interpreting the braille with your user guide since it literally tells you the answer to all the "riddles" once you translate it.
