Pokemon Yellow's MC basically follows some of the anime route and gives him all the starters.

He got Bulbasaur from that lady in Cerulean.

He got Squirtle from the cop in Vermillion.

He got Charmander from that dumb kid near Bill's house.

He got Lapras from the guy in Sliph Co (or Espeon from the Eevee he got in Celadon).

Snorlax was from 1 of the 2 he found blocking his way, either outside of Celadon or south of Lavender.

And when he tried to give Pikachu a stone to evolve, it kept refusing.

Non-damaging moves are pointless and offer nothing to the vast majority of Pokémon players. Why the fuck would I want to get to the epic climactic final battle and then see Red’s Pikachu waste time using Thunder Wave?

TPC doesn’t like to treat Yellow as canon because it’s based off the anime. So it’s more than likely he got it from a trade or something.

Pikachu has been treated as Red's signature Pokemon ever since Yellow. And they do acknowledge Yellow, since they called LGPE remakes of Yellow, not Red/Blue.

In canon all three starters are wild Kantonian Pokemon. He chose Bulbasaur, and caught a Charmander/Squirtle in the wild.

Where is this stated? Even when he's not explicitly mentioned as having been a champion, he's noted as being considered a strong trainer, so we can assume he was champion even in the games that don't mention it. To my knowledge it's never been mentioned that anyone has ever completed the Pokedex, which is unfortunate because that's probably way cooler than whatever Leon's deal was.
