Honestly I kinda agree, I don't care too much for gen 1 as I didn't play it until later in life (as a kid I wasn't allowed a handheld until I was 16 when I bought a 3DS with my own money) but the starters are extremely solid I like all of them. The rest of the gens have good ones and not so good ones.
Squirtle line is easily my favorite then it's probably Bulbasaur. Charmander is good but oddly enough was never my thing.

A few issues I have with them

I prefer everything about picrel to the beta design. Maybe it would be improved with Wartortles ears and tail. I don't like the fin ears on the beta design.

Masuda himself said they chose Blue just because it's the opposite color of Red
