I hated it but it grew on me and its the Gen 6 starter I like the most, granted that's not a high bar. The design is pretty awkward but I guess that's the appeal for me. It's like the shitty armor knights from Fire Emblem.

It's a mix of multiple concepts, retard, an armored knight and a glyptodont, with some armadillo/porcupine qualities. Not even all of its' concepts roll into a ball, and if you had eyes you'd see the shell is made to do that anyway.

So why does it need to adhere to your imaginary prerequisite again?

I like Chesnaughts design but I think he would have been better as a two stage or something similar to Seedot into Shiftry. As a starter I think his design is bad alongside Delphox. Greninjas the only good one but thats cheating because frogs are notoriously easy to design as bipedal because of their legs.

I think he is one of the most forgotten starters, I have never had any interest in him but much of that stemmed from not wanting to use a fighting starter again. He hasn't really had exposure elsewhere either.

It doesn't help the type is really bad.

I found an interesting ranking of the mons by popularity (only the first 720, which is Gen 1 to Gen 6).

Emboar is 193rd and Chesnaught is 252nd.
It's not perfect because the winner was going to be a Mystery Gift for everyone, thus making Mythical mons highly ranked (but Greninja still won).
And among the starters, the loser is...Chesnaught :(
But with Gen 7, 8 and 9 I don't think it's the most unpopular among the starters anymore.

He's pretty good for Smogon singles actually, decently viable in Gen 6 OU despite being UU (higher than most starters). The major issue with him is that both two other Kalos starters are TOO big in comparison.

I hated greninja's tongue scarf and Delphox's shittiness doesnt need to be explained so I picked Chesnaught by default and it grew on me. I guess they wanted to avoid it being a Breloom 2.0 but making it tanky was kinda questionable. Funny enough it gets Body Press in SV but now that I think about it, it may be better off just using Drain Punch
