Final Fantasy X's focus on the love story between Tidus and Yuna, its exploration of religion through each character and the Al Bhed, its deep worldbuilding and fast snappy well-balanced turn-based combat in a linearly designed world simply would not be possible in a Pokemon game designed to be all about a self-insert child and whichever Pokemon he chooses from a pool of 90-900.
Citizen Kane did things only a film can do that seem quaint in retrospect. The same is true of genre defining games like Doom and Rogue. Pokemon is the fast food of RPGs, any complexity found in the multiplayer mode is unintentional and the result of poorly designed power creep clashing against more power creep. No other game on the planet (except low-tier fighting game tourneys) segregates characters based on how good they were designed to be like this.
Jason Godwyn, you clearly want to make your idea of a "Better" Pokemon game. Pokemon fans will hate it more and more as it departs further from what they expect a Pokemon game to be. Your dream Pokemon game isn't their dream Pokemon game, and that's what they demand from every creator of romhacks and fangames. Just drop the franchise and make your own game. You'll be happier, and free from every creative restriction imposed upon you by trying to fit your vision into Nintendo/Game Freak's formula.
