Why does Game Freak refuse to actually take inspiration from fae folk mythology?
I hate how fairy type is treated as a dumping ground for cutesy and stupid designs they couldn't reasonably fit into normal half of the time.

they didn't even call it Fairy to appeal to girls, they called it that because like a few other egg groups with the same names as typings (Dragon, Bug, Water 1/2/3), the Fairy egg group for the most part have a thematic cohesion that a new type based on magic would work with, so they named the type after the Egg Group

Half of the fairies (designed after the type was made) are based on actual fairy tales or stories about fae. Grimmsnarl line is the biggest example, being a trio of goblins. A few of the grandfathered fairy types are too - Mawile, for instance, is based on a yokai, which could be argued to be the Japanese equivalent of fae folk.
