If Shudo remained a principle writer, the anime would likely have ended a long time ago. He wanted to treat Pokemon like any other short-run anime series complete with all the generic 80s/90s post-apocolypse monster tropes.

The anime up to 2002 really had a special feel. The Pokemon world felt exciting and full of wonder, and dangerous. The world was untamed. Ash had to go on weeks long hikes through the woods and over mountains to reach the next town. Biker gangs everywhere. Giovanni had a powerful military at his disposal. Labs conducting secret research to create the most powerful Pokemon. Magic books that could change the landscape. After Shudo left, the anime world gradually became more and more "safe". By the time of SM, it's just mundane real life, but with weird critters as your pets. No more dangerous treks through the wilderness. Travel between regions is a casual joke. No dangerous artifacts or curses or powerful evil organizations to fear.

Honestly my favorite thing about Pokemon. The world is advanced and more utopian than us, but towns are separated far and wide by wilderness. It felt more like another world

My favorite part of Pokemon to this day, and the reason I loved the games, exploring through mountains, caves and the sea, and as shit as it was, Sun and Moon gave me this feeling for the first time after red and blue, while looking at the sea horizon on the first route. Fuck, take me back there bros. We were robbed.

You had crazy high stakes shit that actually fed into the monsters and other weird shit, like ghastly being some talking illusionist spector, going into literally cyberspace with porygon to fix the pokeball transer system, getting your soul ripped out to party with spooks, kaiju mons decades before Dynamax, literally fucking santa claus, sabrina gts fetish fuel and a mindcontrolled pokemon uprising. It felt enjoyable even if you didn't play the games. Also had some legit funny slapstick and fucking guns.

There was a fan theory about Mystery Dungeon happening in a timeline where the bad guy in, it was I believe, the third pokemon ranger game (the one on gen 5) wins and pokemon have a world for themselves or something
