In terms of gameplay, yes. In terms of soundtrack, certainly no. Pokemon music peaked in Gen VI, with composers and sound designers like Shota Kageyama and Hitomi Sato at the helm, i don't suppose we'll ever see that kind of musical quality in the games ever again, not with Ichinose's newest fascination for horrible electro soundfonts in the Switch games (PLA being the only exception).

I mean I love HGSS but that's like saying the 8th Gen, hands down the worst so far, is the best generation because it had great coombait like Nessa, Bea, Marnie, Oleana or Sonia or in it. And I mean, music is far more important in a game like Pokémon than the coomeability of some characters, but they're still both minor aspects in a larger, more complex whole.

I really really hate the HGSS town/city/route soundtrack, but I like the battle onea. Not because of contrariarism, but some of its songs make me really grind my teeth like New Bark, National Park and Ecruteak. It feels like they're trying for it to sound nostalgic. The original GSC versions just feel so much better to me.

The problem with the safari in Johto is that you have to mess with the system clock a lot to get the cool mons, and you can't even get most of them until post game.

Nah. The soundtrack in GSC is still miles better in some areas. HGSS had some cool new additions and succeeded in sprucing up some of the old tracks, but some of the remixes miss the charm of the original entirely.
