Look at how absurdly repetitive the original show was, it's pretty obvious there's ZERO chance they would be changing the status quo if they didn't need to.

The reality is that the Ashnime was already failing hard, so they are going for a last resort, a fresh start.

You've got it backwards. The anime was already tanking with Ash. The new protagonists are the last-ditch effort to make people care again. If it doesn't work, they'll scrap the anime once and for all and replace it with a westernized CGI cartoon from some shitty French or Canadian studio like what happened to Sonic and Mega Man.
