It really triggers my autism that Dark is the only type to not receive a badge boost in Gen 2.

They should've just made it so that defeating Lance gives you the type boost for it since you have to defeat Karen to get to him.

You know what, I agree. But you couldn't have it in Goldenrod because that wouldn't fit thematically, so you'd have to do some shifting around.

Then, replace Karen with a Ground-type Elite Four. There's plenty of strong Ground-types to choose from in Gen 2.

They could have had Giovanni (a former gym leader) return at Goldenrod after you defeat all the other TR members and when you beat him he's so impressed that he disbands TR for good, gives you the dark type boost and disappears.

There was a limited number of different sprites they could use for the overworld NPCs, so they'd have to reuse some. The way they differentiated them was by changing their colour palletes. The Gym Guide uses the brown colour pallete while the BlackGlasses guy uses the blue colour pallete. This isn't the only example. Campers and Youngsters used the same sprite, but Youngsters had the blue colour pallete while Campers had the green colour pallete.

It's not headcanon. The part about the sprites and colour palletes in Gen 2 is objective fact. The HGSS part is assumption, but it is very likely the truth as well.

In Generation II, every Badge boosts the power of the moves of a certain type by 12.5% (1/8), despite never being referenced in the games. Pokemon is honestly unplayable if you're going off of just the ingame resources, at this point I think GF just knows everyone goes to bulbapedia or whatever for what they need and builds the games alongside that, because the games will tell you what your Pokemon's IVs are and what their EV spread is, but has never actually explained how to breed for IVs or what Pokemon give what EVs, you're just thrown to the wolves and expected to figure it out.

Back then we had magazines and strategy guides.
The first time I read about the "box trick to increase your stats" (basically EV training, but you had to box your pokémon and then withdraw then for the stats to update) in one of the Pokémon/Nintendo World magazines, I honestly thought it was another "Mew under the truck" kinda thing.

You see that makes things more obscure. Plus things like egg moves are easily observed in the game itself without calcuation and DVs and stat exp are important to competitive. Compared to all of those the type boost is an incredibly obscure piece of trivia

And that's why I say, that wasn't true in Gen 2 era.
The official strategy guide for both Red/Blue and Gold/Silver had mentions of badge boosts, and no mention of DVs or stat exp.
Today I know that IVs/EVs are way more commonplace knowledge because of competitive, but that wasn't the case back then.
