Reminder that the only reason HG/SS had a Battle Frontier is because they just copy/pasted the entire thing from Platinum despite that not making any sense whatsoever. People never seem to want to mention how lazy that was. OR/AS just did the same thing with the Maison that was available to port over from X/Y.

Adding the Platinum Battle Frontier is an expansion to what Crystal introduced, along with everything else HGSS does, while ORAS replaces the Battle Frontier out of pure laziness.

That might sound good on paper, but porting over the Platinum frontier was pure laziness too. They didn't even bother to come up with some new Frontier Brains, there's just a carbon copy of facilities and people from Sinnoh in Johto for some fucking reason. ORAS would have had a frontier of its own if XY did, but it would have just been a port of that.

So you're saying Emerald is less lazy than ORAS? Good to know, I'll remember that next time somebody says third versions are lazy rehashes of the same game. Also, that would ironically mean the Battle Maison is just a lazy copy-paste job from BW, given how not only are there similar Pokemon (that's even true of the Gen 4-5 transfer for the record) but nearly identical NPC dialogue where the only difference is how it was translated.

Pokemon remakes have always been lazy. It goes all the way back to FR/LG, where they decided to shroud all of Kanto in forests despite the theme of the region involving encroaching technology/urbanization because it meant less tilework. It fucks with location-specific themes too; Pewter city goes from being a city next to a rocky mountainside to just another fucking city surrounded by dense trees.

This trend of laziness continues with HG/SS where they missed a bunch of details from the originals, such as the loss of sleeping Pokemon from headbutt trees, Kurt no longer actually moving to his workbench to work on apricorn balls, SS Aqua trainer battles not resetting with every trip which eliminated one of the best grinding locations in the game, and music tracks playing in the wrong locations.

I think the former is more a Masuda problem, if I had to guess. This is entirely based off the other weird shit he did with FRLG, which is a lot I can't really get into it. The latter seems more like missing minor details (which is unfortunate), a weird balancing change, and what might be an actual glitch. I'd personally take a game that adds more on top of most of what the originals offered over cutting an entire area from the original game in return for admittedly decent online integration, or whatever the fuck BDSP was supposed to be.

This isn't even mentioning the extra spritework Emerald had compared to the basically nothing they did with the Gen 6 models. Granted, it might be more effort to re-create a game in an existing engine, even if you have the blueprints right there. It's definitely more effort than just adding new shit on to a fork, if not particularly more difficult. Maybe at the end of the day FRLG is the most high effort remake, which is kind of fucked to think about because it barely paid off. Maybe it's not about effort but about effectively using the time and engine you have to the best effect. It's why ORAS has great expansions on Record Mixing, or while Emerald/HGSS/B2W2 are so beloved. It's also why BDSP is fucking dogshit, they just didn't have any time to do anything good.

BW isn't perfect, but I have no doubt in my mind that a modern GF remake will not only not fix the problems, but add new problems and also make the game worse overall. BDSP exceeded my low expectations. The best I can hope for is an Iwao game, he seems like he's cool with Morimoto, and I've seen what his effort looks like personally with USUM and from an outside perspective with PLA (I hate the idea, not even pirating it, sorry). Even if it's not Iwao, somebody might be better suited to do some weird Unova-based engine test title, again Let's Go and PLA show more potential there (even if Let's Go has more Masuda problems than his last Kanto remake).

I like HGSS and its content but it definitely feels like a soulless recreation in already extremely soulless generation. It doesn't feel like it has the same heart like the original Johto games do.

All the effort and budget of those remakes went into the features for the GBA wireless adaptator, which is kind of sad because no one gave or still gives a shit about it. Otherwise FRLG are basically just glorified romhacks of RS with less content and revamped models.

The Pokemon, sorry for not being absolutely clear. Every Pokemon in Emerald got new animations for being sent out. I'm almost positive there's zero new animations for the Gen 6 models, despite adding new animations being a lot easier than re-spriting shit, even if some of the Emerald animations are done on hardware as well.

I wouldn't necessarily say FRLG has less content than RS (especially with RS's dearth of postgame content after a fairly solid main game), but it's segmented weirdly between the not super amazingly designed Kanto maps and the borderline experimental but better than Hoenn's island maps. It's not a great impression either way.

Just finished SP and I loved it, granted gen 4 was my first and is still my favourite gen. I did it as a hardcore nuzlocke and had a lot of fun, the gym leaders were challenging and I sustained a lot of casualties and my initial idea of a team did not work for Cynthia so I had to invent my own strategy. The entire process was a lot of fun. The exp share meant I could have a huge roster of pokemon to use as well plus the grand underground was great.
