Gone are the days of massive gym arenas and stadiums with cool music and hundreds or thousands of people cheering on the battle.
Now we go register at the desk in a little building, then go back outside to battle Gym Leaders on a rented tennis court with a few stragglers standing around.

Then we go heal our pokemon at the gas stati-, out door poke mart.

True, they were way over the top, but I kind of liked it in a silly way.
In all seriousness, I'm more jarred by the huge contrast between Sw/Sh and S/V. Probably because Sh/Sh was over the top on a lot of things.
The weirdest for me is going from quaint and comfy cafe like pokemarts to what looks like gas station pumps on the side of the road.

Gym trainers for adults. Adults climb the tower and battle a sequence of trainers, similar to Kanto gyms but vertical. Children go kick a ball around, gather flowers or make faces at a teacher or whatever instead.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure the set up of the league and the contrast between them is intentional, given that Galar's league is a huge economic and cultural highlight of it's region with gym leaders being treated like sports celebrities while Paldea's league is secondary to the Academy which is the major reason anyone would visit or live there (as stated in history class). Hell, each of their "gimmicks" also represent this in some way, as Dynamax allows for huge spectator sport events while Terrastylizing is a fairly new concept that was only possible outside the crater 10 years ago.

The reason that we don't have indoor Gyms, or battles in general, in this game is entirely because of the seamless transition into battles now.
Because seamless transitions require that there always be enough room in the environment around you for the battle to take place.

I said exactly this problem would happen from the very beginning when seamless transitions were going to become a thing. As cool as it might seem, and take less time, it limits level design because now everywhere has to be designed with battling in mind.

Probably because they want to keep it an open world theme, and they don't want the player to go through 2 loading screen just to heal their pokemon.
