Gen 1 and 2 sprites can be between 40x40, 48x48, and 56x56.

Every Gen 1 and 2 sprite (both PKMN and trainers) is 56 x 56.

I work on them almost every day, I'm positive.

Forgot to mention: all BACK sprites are 48x48.
And remember: if you ARE making back sprites, make sure you RESOLVE the model on the horizontal edges.
You can cut it off from the bottom, but NOT the top, left, or right.

They have variable size
the dimensions are stored along with the image data
