I never would have expected this show would get an entire miniseries of sorts to wind down. I'm not expecting much but by expectations have already been surpassed so surprise me OLM.

While its continuity is so light and Ash's character so often tweaked to fit the moment that it would be better described as "relaunching" every 3 years, the connective tissue is technically there, and all kinds of shows that don't dramatically acknowledge the passage of time can still call back to earlier characters or events as part of the ending. And if nothing else Ash has only seen Misty for few days time in what amounts to... six years of in-anime time? That's reason enough. The Ash of the ending is not the Ash that Pokemania children watched, no... but then he was never going to be.
