The Pokémon anime has always been superior to the games. In the games you have to restart from the beginning without any of your old bros as a new MC unlike Ash who got to travel from region to region.

I remember kids used to shit on Ash for not earning badges, releasing his Pokemon, and otherwise doing stuff that no one would ever do in the games. Turns out we got filtered by Shudo's creative writing that made Ash into a real character and the Pokémon world seem more "authentic." The later seasons and miniseries that try to use game logic for everything are awkward.

Never let a gaymer do actual writing.
I remember a friend recommending Pokemon Origins as "the anime but good" and it was so fucking boring, and then I realized "being just like the games" was the appeal of it.

I liked Origins for what it was, but an actual full-fledged anime like that wouldn't work. They had to gloss over so many game elements and plot points just to make it bearable. There was basically no narrative or character development outside of Red having a bond with Charizard.
