Let's face it, a lot of Gen 1 Pokemon had really lazy names, at least in English.

Jigglypuff's Japanese name is just Purin which literally means 'pudding'
If you search Purin you will not see pictures of Jigglypuff, you will see pictures of pudding. Even with something as bland as Seel you'll still at least see the Pokemon if you look it up

Did anyone actually care back then? It feels like once newer Pokemon appeared and people were critical of them, people countered by saying that Gen 1 did some of these things too but then somewhere along the line it became genuine disdain for the original 151.

Seel's jp name is Barko, I'd call it that.
Spearow is fine.

Imo Venonat and Venomoth are the worst gen 1 english names.
Venonat's jp name is Kongpang, Kong meaning insect and pang like the ping of radar (its eyes are like radar blips.) I'd call Venonat Pingsect and give Venomoth it's jp name, Morphon.
