We'll just gloss over the fact that he calls you pal, gives you tips and encouragement, and actually respects you as a rival and wants you do to well so you can push each other
That stuff is just inconvenient for the narrative I guess

But my best friend is an asshole, and all the coolest people I’ve known are assholes. My best friend has people become obsessed with him all the time. The trick is not being an asshole to the people who’ve won and deserve your loyalty, aside from friendly banter and ribbing.
The most popular characters are always assholish too, as long as they have good hearts. People like to be challenged and riled.

People like to imagine Blue as an asshole bully that hated Red, and Red as this quiet weird kid that just had to take it. Probably because it reflects their experience growing up.

Reality is that they were both confident, competitive Type-A personalities and pushed each other to the top, and trash talk was just a normal part of that not some traumatic experience.
