I was thinking of starting a Poketube channel. What would be a niche that hasn't been explored yet?

I was thinking of video essays, but actual video essays with proper sources and citations, not just a 7 hour summary of the plot. I work in academia at the moment so I wanted to branch out into a new field as a hobby.

I don't want to make money, I just like Pokémon and want to talk about it.

say something new i guess, go in depth to talk about some of the spinoffs, or talk about pokemon's early days [be it the dev team dynamics, game freak's history or pokemon's inspiration from dragon quest]. i know you said you don't care about engagement but if you did want people to see your shit, you could always talk about the new games, but again, make sure you're saying something of value - ie something like Pokemon's transition to a more open main campaign and what it did right/wrong and what it could mean for the future of the series. like you said, it's very easy to make video essays with "7 HOUR COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS" but none of that is needed for a good one (brevity is the soul of wit, after all). just make sure you are saying something of value or something relatively new/niche to western audiences/the community dialogue. also this is probably a hot take but don't even bother if you don't play games other than pokemon; most people with something to say in regards to media gained that "skill" by consuming and analyzing a lot of it.

I never understood why youtubers do smash or pass. They can't give real answers because they'll get cancelled for being zoophiles or pedophiles so they can only go for a handful of morally allowed ones like Lucario, Gardevior, Lopunny and a few obvious joke ones like Bronzong or whatever.

Definitely true, I've noticed that most youtube essayists seem to be done by superfans who don't consume much else, so they have huge tunnel vision. There's this one Fire Emblem youtuber I used to listen to that said Harry Potter was his favorite fiction ever and hearing that made me feel kinda sad.
Pokemon games are tricky to objectively analyze because they're so repetitive and reliant on multiplayer. DP was revolutionary for its time for its sheer amount of mechanical additions but there's not much reason to replay them now, even Plat is becoming a hard sell for some people. It's very different from something like Sonic (another Youtube essayist darling) which has incredibly different games to look at.

Talk about the level design of every Pokemon game and how they've gone downhill since Sun and Moon and how Emerald was likely the peak of level design in Pokemon. Do that and I'll likely subscribe once you give out the link to your channel.
