Marley is the player character.
It’s 5 years after the events of DPPt. You start the game out by selecting your character’s base stats (kind of like Fallout). The story begins with Marley narrating about how Team RR (Rainbow Rocket) has threatened to use the power of the legendary Pokémon to take over the world and then describes that she was captured by RR and is missing her Arcanine. You wake up in an RR cell and when a grunt walks in you knock him out and escape the RR complex which is located somewhere in Johto. You then go on an adventure around all the regions capturing Pokémon, defeating Team RR, units, and calming down some enraged Pokémon that have been corrupted by RR energy. Eventually it will come to a point where you are face to face with Giovanni himself, who reveals that Arcanine is in the process of being corrupted by RR energy. Marley defeats Giovanni, then must fight her long lost Pokémon. After Arcanine is defeated, he calms down, and they are finally reunited. Marley has brought Team RR to their knees.
Depending on your character stats and how much you improve them you can do certain things like run longer and faster, carry more weight, pass charisma checks, and learn certain crafting recipes and hack into certain systems to your advantage.
