The more I actually stop and meditate on it, the more I realize that the primary reason why shipfags come across as astronomically unhinged is that most, if not all of them seem entirely incapable of self-conscious rationalization over why this actually matters to them so much. A lot of shippers try to dissect random moments and look for clues to prove that their ship is the one true ship, like a schizophrenic seeing patterns everywhere. They make up all sorts of conspiracies or believe things to be something completely different, like people claiming one Japanese ending to the movies was Misty and Ash's child

Mostly because other characters in popular shows like Goku, Ichigo, Naruto, Edward, etc did. Those shows weren't strictly romance related and the MC's still got laid. I suspect that's the reason. Probably at least. Plus self insertion with all the Pokegirls people are horny for running around in that show.

I guess their argument is that every fictional character, especially main characters that are self-insertable, needs to have that "happily ever after" saccharine ending that's been pushed in media even before those other shows mentioned, like they think that real life works that way when it hasn't for a while. If anything, those endings tend to come off as insulting instead of heartwarming now no matter your stance on shipping.
