All 3 additional types existed because Psychic and Dragon had too much rope and Fighting was getting too cocky.

Meanwhile Ghost continues to reap the benefits of future gens because the first Gen screwed it over.

And as if Rock and Ground weren't already overlapping enough why throw in another earth type like Steel into the mix? God they are retarded.

Fairy is the best thing that has happened to pokemon. Dark was an unbalanced piece of shit type that needed a real counter and ice is too much of a meme type to counter dragon, this game NEEDS fairy types

Dark exists to keep Psychic in check without retconning Ghost to be broken and compensates by giving Fighting something of value that doesn't already overlap with Water and Grass making them more than just glorified Normal typing. Incidentally Dark type was boon for Bug type since it gave them something other than Psychic and Grass to counter.

My guess is that
- fire, electric, ice are the energy types, the classical rpg elements
- poison is its own property for venomous creatures
- ground, water, flying are earth, water, air, the three elements the world is divided into, for pokemon who are earthbound, aquatic or airborne
- grass, rock are living non-animal matter, plant and mineral
- psychic, fighting are brains and brawn, mind and body, physical and metaphysical
- bug, ghost, dragon are creatures with a specific kind of morphology
