Sun and Moon should've been their final game. The champion battle theme and various cameos screamed finale more than anniversary.
They've lost the drive to make the games good after that and before as well with ORAS's lack of Emerald content.
You could argue the same for B2W2 with the PWT and it being the last great game or Gold and Silver as originally intended, and I agree, but Gen 7 was their last chance at ending on a respectable note. As of now, I see little to no hope at it getting better.
