The Pokemon tcg has always had more of a collector base than a playerbase. I still don't understand how you fuckers aren't capable of keeping a thread alive though. Seems like every collectors thread we have multiple people asking where the general for the card game is. I feel like you're all just dropping the ball on posting in your threads.

Like any trading card game game, it just depends on how much you want to invest into it. Sure it's expensive if you want to play the meta, but if you just want to play with a friend for cheap, just buy whatever new decks recently released, they're cheap and tend to be balanced well with each other.

idk if it's representative, but in my shop the few that still played the game transitioned to Digimon. I abandoned all TCGs before Digimon released so I don't know if the game's any better than Pokemon.

The lack of thread posting, or the disparity between collectors and players? For the latter, it's largely BECAUSE the game is so simple that it doesn't attract as many players as more complex games like Magic or Yugioh. Then there's the fact that pokemon as a franchise has a strong emphasis on collecting in the first place. And almost everyone collected cards during pokemania even if they didn't play because it was just sort of the thing to do, so a lot of people have nostalgia for the cards themselves rather than the actual card game. And when you've got at least a decent amount of collectors interested in a hobby, it's just going to keep attracting more collectors because desirability is what makes collectibles popular in the first place.

My experience as a wee lad was that for a few months, all the kids on the playground were buying card packs and showing off the rare holographic cards, but nobody knew how to actually play. I never learnt either, because the rules were so different from the games (what everyone was actually playing). The fad for the cards died out right around when YuGiOh got popular, the games stayed popular until jr high a few years later

Playing pokemon is pretty boring compared to most other card games. The biggest draw I ever saw to Pokemon over other TCGs is that excluding the alt arts and rainbow rares the game is very cheap to actually play. Half of the top 8 decks in the meta right now are cheaper than my pauper mtg decks
Everyone who buys the cards down the shop just buys whole boxes, rips them, scans them to check if they made or lost money then trades money cards in for more boxes. Its like scratch off tickets for manchildren

Doubt considering most Pauper decks cost ~$60 with some rare cases of more expensive decks making like 1% of all Pauper decks. Also MtG has like a half dozen of non-rotating formats when PTCG has virtually 0 (zero) of them.

Thing is if you want to play a card game with a friend it might be easier and better to boot up an online tcg like hearthstone, runeterra, or gwent. You don't even need to be in person unlike a physical tcg.

Pokemon TCG is simply not very fun as a card game. It feels way less interactive than either Magic or Yugioh and more like a "I do my own thing" kind of game. There are interactions but they're all really one sided and have very limited counterplay (Gusting, Marnie / N'ing) outside of the Stadium floodgates.
It also doesn't help that while the other big 2 have at least passable online sims to get new players, PTCG has absolute dogshit with both TCG Online requiring you to grind/spend money or PTCGLive having bad UI

I was giving it a $50 limit since my most expensive one is pestilence
My standard deck is considered ultra budget at $80 and that would be the third most expensive deck in pokemon right now instead of the cheapest
