Him and AI Prof were the hardest, of course if you spammed the XP candies the game throws at you and explore a ton you can trivialize anything, but I went with rotating my team through an entire box of mons so many times I end up a few levels below the NPC levels.
The AI Prof especially got me to the last Pokemon because I didn't even look up the paradox's types.

Geeta was very easy but Nemona is surprisingly hard. I almost got destroyed by her Goodra, Dudunsparce, and Quaquaval

Giving it no moves like Lance is one way.
Clavel had coverage moves, unlike a majority of other trainers. Take Penny's allCharm Eevee team.

Judging by this thread, it is apparently impossible to consider a Pokemon batle difficult and that they are all easy no matter what. It doesn't matter if he could potentially sweep you with just Terstalized Aqua Step, he's still as easy as a route 1 trainer with Rattata.

Oh but I bet some battle in Gen 1 where an Arcanine only knew Take Down and Ember was actually the hardest thing in the series.

This is one of the things I dislike

>play like you're supposed to, try to fill the dex and create a balanced team
>get to the final bosses with a team of the same level or lower
>hard boss battles where you have to strategize and use lots of items

>spend 10 hours grinding the overworld for candies

My raid teams and my ingame teams are seperated. Raidmons are all meta pokemon and my ingame team I autistically make sure they are six levels below the boss. Otherwise everyone hits level 100 way too fast because of six star raids

Just catching every new pokemon I could in the story leveled up my team so much that I had to hold off overworld trainer battles until after I got all my gym badges to avoid over leveling my team. I was still always around 5 levels above pokemon in story battles.

Abomasnow isn't even that bad of a pokemon. Sure it's got a lot of weaknesses but snow + resistances to some of the best types in the game including water, electric and ground as well as a crucial neutrality to ice at least makes it usable. Not to mention it's got decent bulk as well as a somewhat versatile movepool letting it threaten things offensively.

Clavell, Arven and AI Turo wrecked me and Nemona was a nice challenge.
I was playing with my favorites, rotating my team a lot, using no held items, no TMs, and no exp or Rare candies. I was not disappointed with the difficulty level of the endgame, personally, but I realize I held myself back a lot.

This was me. Clavell pushed my shit in multiple times because I refused to grind or use just my higher level mons. I wanted to use his fight to level up/evolve shit so that was a bad call. But even when I did pull out the higher level Pokémon I still got stomped because he was easily 10 levels above me and I didn't expect some of those coverage moves, Abomasnow to be so bulky, or for Gyarados to keep landing Stone Edge. That's what I get for doing things in whatever order I wanted and switching out my team before every NPC battle, I guess...

Did the RNG change in this game to favor NPCs? I have had multiple fights where moves with 80% or less accuracy hit every single time. I understand they still have pretty good odds of landing, but I feel like in the past they never hit. But this time I had a Tera Hawlucha land Cross Chop all 5x, Clavell's Gyarados hit me with Stone Edge 3x in a row, Penny's Jolteon land Thunder 5x back to back, etc. But then when I throw out Hurricane or Hydro Pump it's like fucking myself bc they never land. Such bullshit

Clavell made me nervous but I had some good counters to his strong mons so I won without item cheese.
Post E4 Nemona I ended up boosting the shit out of my Annihilape and Rage Fisting most of her team. but I probably could have beat her without doing that if I just retried the fight and made smarter choices.
Boosted Annihilape carried me hard against AI Prof. I think if I wanted to beat her without doing that, I would need to grind a few levels.

What I'm getting from this thread is that people don't pick balanced teams, to the point that one Pokemon CAN sweep them at roughly an equal level. If your team is all weak to Flying, why would you choose your 6th Pokemon to be a Grass or Bug type?

With a 30-level difference, you just have to avoid obviously ineffective moves.
The silliest example of this is the current speedrun meta where they grab a Flamigo, feed it so many candies that poor thing probably gets diabetes, and then wreck 9 out of 10 opponents with a single Low Kick or Acrobatics.

Miltank has insane stats for Gen 2, a game filled to the brim with shitmons. For instance, Miltank is better than any of the Pokemon in even the seventh gym. You're fighting a good fully evolved Pokemon with a move that turns into a guaranteed 1HKO very quickly and it has all the bulk it'll need to get it set up unopposed.

So it's a combination of your options being shit, and Whitney's Pokemon being overtuned for that point in the game unless you brought certain Pokemon like Geodude or Machop.

All of this would be fixed if game freak just included a hard mode where enemies are always like 3-5 levels higher than you no matter what. That being said, I think it’s fine that the game makes it pretty easy to play how you want with how easy it is to rotate Pokémon. So if you want to nerf your own team for difficulty you can.
